Introduction to Skin Care
Cosmetics have been prevalent within society for many years and will continue to remain ubiquitous. Beauty, in the sense of maintenance has, in more recent, years become favoured as there is now more research into what is beneficial for skin health throughout our lives; thus, leading into the next generation of cosmetics called cosmeceuticals. Despite the fact that they have been around for decades, it is only in the last decade that more information has become available as to which ingredients are beneficial for certain skin concerns.
What are cosmeceuticals? Great question. It is the combination of cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Coined by Dr. Albert Kligman in 1984, cosmeceuticals are products that can be applied topically, much like any cosmetic product, but contain ingredients that have pharmaceutical characteristics. What do we mean by pharmaceutical characteristics? Another great question. Basically, these ingredients are capable of having a therapeutic effect that will positively affect skin cell function. It is always important to use products that are backed by research and use high quality ingredients that are catered to your skin type. Skin care, in general, is beneficial for your skin not only now, but in the future.
